Sadly this has now ceased. These photos were taken during my visits in 2001 and 2002. South African based engineer Phil Girdlestone was contracted to design the Lempor front end and oil firing system. R711 is now in the care of Steamrail Victoria and has apparently lost the Lempor exhaust system. Meanwhile R766, which is privately owned, is also at Steamrail with (as of December 2004) its future yet to be decided. These were taken at Rio Turbio and Rio Gallegos. The locomotives at 750mm gauge capable of 1341hp following modernisation by Ing. L.D.Porta in the late 1950s/early 1960s. As viewed in 2004 these locomotives display differing degrees of demodification and none can really be thought of a being in anything near the condition Porta intended. Built in 1994 as a K class locomotive it is based on the first Garratt types ever built - compound 0-4-0+0-4-0s K1 & K2 - used on a 60cm gauge line in southern Tasmania, Australia. However No.2 was built as a simple not a compound. As built No.2, then called 'Nora', proved somewhat unsuitable for the line and in many ways badly designed and constructed. During 2001, following a serious driving wheel failure No.2 was comprehensively rebuilt and became class KM (M indicating 'modified') No.2 'Ing. L.D.Porta'. Further modification of this locomotive is on the cards for the future as money and time permits. The outline losely based on that of the famous Manning Wardle 2-6-2t type used on the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in north Devon, UK. However the loco is in fact based very much around the standard Winson "ZB" type produced for several different gauge railways around the world. No.3 proved to be a great example of "you get what you pay for" and rapidly proved to be almost useless. From 1999 onwards, when engineer Shaun McMahon arrived as fulltime engineer at FCAF, the locomotive has been modified. To date the modifications have been fairly limited but have still revolutionised the performance of 'Camila' turning it into a really useful locomotive. Most shots were taken on the return leg from the footplate of the loco. FCAF was opened in 1994 largely along the trackbed of a long closed 60cm gauge forestry railway. The current line has the unusual gauge of 50cm. It is located at the southern tip of South America on the island of 'Tierra del Fuego' a few kilometres from the city of Ushuaia. It is the most southerly railway in the world. An alternative name for FCAF is 'The Train at the End of the World'.
